How to Travel Around Cape Town

Getting around Cape Town is pretty easy. You can rent a car (which is the most convenient way) and drive yourself, or you can use Uber to get around. The city also has good public transport, like the MyCiti Bus (R90 for a day pass), which runs to most tourist spots.

Tip: Parking in Cape Town can be tricky, so always check for secure parking options at your accommodation.

1. Visit Table Mountain

A trip to Cape Town isn’t complete without seeing Table Mountain. You can either take the cable car (R430 per adult, round trip) or, if you’re up for a challenge, hike to the top, the view from the top is always worth it. It’s a great spot to snap some photos, relax, and take in the incredible views of the city and ocean.

Tip: If you’re short on time, the cable car is the way to go, but hiking up offers a more adventurous experience!

2. V&A Waterfront

The V&A Waterfront is one of the city’s most popular attractions, and it’s easy to see why. From shopping to dining and entertainment, it’s got it all. We love strolling along the harbor, grabbing a bite to eat, and just soaking in the atmosphere. It’s also where you catch the ferry to Robben Island (R400 for locals and R600 for tourists for a round trip), which is a must-visit if you’re interested in South Africa’s history.

Tip: The Two Oceans Aquarium is also here (R250 per adult), which is perfect for families or anyone who loves marine life.

3. Robben Island Tour

Speaking of history, a visit to Robben Island is something you can’t miss while in Cape Town. The ferry ride takes you to the island, where you can explore the prison and learn about the country’s apartheid history. The tour is led by former political prisoners, which makes it a really moving and informative experience.

Tip: Tickets sell out quickly, so be sure to book in advance!

4. Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens

If you need a peaceful escape, head to the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens (R80 per adult). It’s set against the backdrop of Table Mountain, so the scenery is just gorgeous. Whether you’re in the mood for a leisurely stroll, a picnic, or just relaxing on the lawns, it’s the perfect spot to unwind.

Tip: Check out the Tree Canopy Walkway for an awesome view of the gardens from above.

5. Cape Point & Cape of Good Hope

A trip to Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope is an absolute must. These places are full of rugged beauty and are perfect for a scenic drive, a hike, or just some breathtaking photos. While you’re there, don’t forget to visit Boulders Beach (R45pp for locals or R190pp for tourists), where you can hang out with the penguins!

Tip: There are a ton of wildlife sightings around here, so keep your eyes peeled for baboons, ostriches, and other cool creatures.

6. Wine Tasting in the Cape Winelands

If you’re a fan of wine, then a day trip to the Cape Winelands is a must. Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paternoster are all close to Cape Town and have some of the best wineries in the world. We’ve done wine tours here a few times, and there’s no shortage of stunning estates offering tastings and food pairings. A typical wine tasting is from R150+ per person.

Tip: Don’t miss the wine tram in Franschhoek (R330 per person)—it’s such a fun way to see the vineyards.

7. Bo-Kaap Neighborhood

The Bo-Kaap is one of Cape Town’s most colorful neighborhoods. Known for its vibrant houses and rich history, it’s a must-see when you’re in the city. We love wandering the cobblestone streets, snapping photos, and learning about the area’s cultural significance. You can also pop into the Bo-Kaap Museum (R60) to learn more about the community’s history.

Tip: Grab a Cape Malay curry while you’re here—it’s a local delicacy!

8. Chapman’s Peak Drive

If you’re in the mood for a scenic drive, Chapman’s Peak Drive is one of the most beautiful coastal routes you’ll ever experience. The winding roads offer amazing views of the ocean, and there are plenty of spots where you can stop to take in the scenery. It’s a great way to see the natural beauty of Cape Town.

Tip: Stop by Hout Bay for a bite to eat or a boat trip—it’s a lovely spot!

9. Hike Lion’s Head

Another hike you’ll love is Lion’s Head (free entry). It’s a bit easier than Table Mountain, but the views are just as spectacular. If you love hiking, this hike is definitely worth it for the views over Cape Town.

Tip: If you’re feeling adventurous, take the chains route for some rock scrambling!

10. Zeitz MOCAA Museum

If you’re into art, then the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) (R250 per Adult) is a must-visit . It’s housed in a former grain silo, and the exhibitions here are all about celebrating African creativity. You can spend hours exploring the museum, it is very unique.

Tip: The rooftop café (R60 for a coffee) is a great spot to relax and take in the views of the city.

11. Sunset Cruise

Ending the day with a sunset cruise (R500 - R900 per person) is one of the best ways to wrap up your time in Cape Town. You’ll get incredible views of the city and Table Mountain as the sun sets over the ocean. It’s the perfect way to relax and take in the beauty of the city.

Tip: Bring a jacket because it can get chilly on the water in the evening!

12. Beach Clubs

Cape Town also has some great beach clubs, perfect for a day of relaxation. Here are a few favorites:

The Bungalow in Clifton offers beach views and a laid-back vibe. A meal here will typically set you back around R250-R500 per person.
Shimmy Beach Club at the V&A Waterfront has a great pool and beach access. Expect to pay R200-R400 per person for a meal.
The 41 at Camps Bay is another spot with a stunning ocean view. Expect prices around R300-R600 for a meal.
